What is a forward contract?

A forward contract lets you fix an exchange rate today for a currency purchase or payment you will make later, up to five years from now. If the market moves against you, your rate and your profit margin stay protected. If you need to buy USD, EUR or GBP in six months, you know today what it will cost in Canadian dollars.

Who uses forward contracts

Importers
You pay suppliers in USD, EUR or another currency weeks or months after you price your goods. A forward contract fixes the cost of that payment so your margin does not shrink when the dollar moves.
Exporters and foreign-currency earners
You invoice in a foreign currency and pay your costs in CAD. Locking the rate protects the Canadian dollar value of what you will collect.
Long-term contracts and budgets
Multi-year projects, supplier agreements and annual budgets need stable numbers. Forwards let you lock rates for up to five years ahead.

"We use FinXtra to mainly purchase USD dollar forwards to secure rates for our clients years ahead of time. Giuseppe always responds quickly to any request. I have dealt with other currency companies in the past and found them lacking. Fully recommend FinXtra."

Forward contracts: common questions

What is a forward contract?

A forward contract is a form of hedging. It allows you to lock in a rate for up to five years. This helps to avoid currency risk and provides certainty about your profit margin.

How far ahead can I lock an exchange rate?

Up to five years. The right length depends on when your payments or receipts are due, and we help you match it to your cash flow.

Do I need to put up collateral?

Ask us about zero margin forwards, which have no upfront collateral requirement for qualifying clients. We confirm the terms for your situation during your free analysis.

How much does a forward contract cost?

There are no hidden fees. Pricing is transparent and market-linked, and we quote the rate before you commit.

Which currencies can I hedge?

We work with 135+ currencies. Availability of forwards depends on the currency pair, so tell us what you need and we will confirm it during your analysis.

Is FinXtra regulated?

FinXtra works with Ebury, which provides the payment and foreign exchange services. Ebury Canada is registered with FINTRAC, and all client funds are held with Ebury Canada in line with regulatory standards. See the regulatory disclosure at the bottom of this page for the US, UK and Mexico.

A forward contract fixes your rate in both directions. If the market moves in your favour, you do not benefit on the hedged amount. Forward contracts are provided by Ebury under its terms and conditions. This page is general information, not financial advice.
